Coffee & Chores

Coffee & Chores is a simple farm-based gathering for veterans. Each session brings together a small group of veterans to spend time outdoors, help with light farm chores, and share coffee and conversation. Sessions typically last about an hour and are hosted by local farms across South Carolina. ​ The goal is simple: create space for veterans to connect, spend time outdoors, and build community. ​ There is no cost to participate and no farming experience is required.

Sessions follow a simple format: Welcome & introductions (10 minutes) Meet the host farmer and other veterans. Light farm chores (30 minutes) Simple tasks like feeding animals, gathering eggs, or small seasonal work. Coffee & conversation (30 minutes) ​​ Relax, talk, and enjoy time together. Sessions are small, informal, and designed to be welcoming for everyone.

This program is based on a simple idea: connection matters. ​ Many veterans miss the sense of community that existed during military service. Spending time outdoors, working with your hands, and sharing conversation with other veterans can help rebuild that sense of connection. ​ Coffee & Chores is part of a Clemson University research initiative exploring how farm-based community programs may support veteran well-being. ​ Participation is always voluntary.
